On Saturday, the LU Flames once again proved they were playoff bound. Taking control of the game in the 1st quarter with a Field goal from Ben Shipps, Gardner-Webb just could not come back to win. Rashad Jennings, Jonathan Crawford and Dominic Bolden put points on the board in the 2nd quarter leading to a 24-3 lead at halftime. Jennings scared the crowd in the 3rd quarter when he recovered slowly from a run. Matt Bevins kicked a 42 yard field goal in the 3rd quarter and Shipps put up a 28 yard field goal in the 4th to seal the win. Now the Flames are hoping to beat Elon next weekend so they can make it into the playoffs. With the performance put up by the Flames this year, we are all hoping that they will make it to playoff territory and can prove to all that the Big South does have champions!

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Following their second-straight shutout of a Big South opponent, the Flames moved to No. 17 in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches Polls, which were released earlier today.
The 42-0 Homecoming victory over Charleston Southern helped the 7-1 Flames move up three spots in the Sports Network poll. William & Mary, who was not even in the Top 25 two weeks ago, narrowly edged out the Flames for No. 16 following the Tribe’s 34-24 victory over Rhode Island. Liberty, Lafayette, South Carolina State and William & Mary had the largest leaps on the week in the FCS Coaches Poll, with each squad moving up four spots from the previous week. The Flames moved up to No. 17, while William & Mary (No. 19), South Carolina (No. 20) and Lafayette (No. 22) all trail Liberty in the weekly ranking. Elon, Liberty’s regular-season finale opponent on Nov. 22, suffered one of the larger drops in voting this week, following its 55-20 setback to No. 3/5 Wofford. The Phoenix now rank No. 10 in the Sports Network poll and No. 12 in the FCS Coaches listing. The No. 17 ranking in both national FCS listings marks the eight-straight week the Flames have appeared in the national Top 25 ranking, extending the program’s record for consecutive weeks in the rankings. The Flames will put their newest national ranking on the line this weekend when Liberty travels to Clinton, S.C., to face off against Presbyterian. The gridiron battle between Liberty and its future Big South foe is slated for 1:30 p.m., at Bailey Memorial Stadium. |

The LU Flames continued their dominance in this division by taking control of the game in the first few possessions on Saturday at Williams Stadium. Everything seemed to be going right for LU as they stormed to a 14-0 lead within minutes of the opening kickoff. Penalties against Charleston Crawford were taken advantage of by the Flames and the dominance continued throughout the game. Jonathan Crawford and Dominic Bolden touchdowns in the first quarter were followed by another remarkable 2nd quarter from Rashad Jennings and Jonathan Crawford. At halftime, the Flames led 35-0 and the domination continued. QB Brock Smith ran the ball into the endzone in the 4th quarter giving the Flames their final score of 42-0. LU outperformed the opponents in offense and defensive plays. The determination of the Flames and their outstanding game winning skills continue to prove the character and winning attitude of this year's LU Flames team. The Flames will be away next weekend playing against Presbyterian. Let's all wish them luck as they continue their excellence!

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty’s loss to Lafayette on Saturday evening ended the nation’s longest FCS winning streak at 11 games. However, it didn’t end Liberty’s run in the Top 25, as the Flames remained nationally ranked despite the setback.
In the Sports Network and the FCS Coaches polls, the Flames fell six spots in each national ranking. Liberty now ranks No. 20 in the Sports Network poll and No. 21 in FCS Coaches Poll. The 14-point victory by Lafayette over previously unbeaten Liberty propelled the Leopards into the Top 25, as the squad is now ranked No. 24 in the Sports Network ranking. The rankings for the Flames marks the seventh-consecutive week Liberty has been ranked among the nation’s Top 25 teams, extending the Flames’ school record streak for weeks in the national polls. James Madison remains atop both national rankings, followed by three-time defending national FCS champion Appalachian State at No. 2. Elon, who the Flames will host at Williams Stadium in both squad’s regular-season finales on Nov. 22, is ranked No. 3 in the Sports Network and No. 7 in the FCS Coaches Poll, following the Phoenix’s seventh-straight victory. The Flames will be putting their eight-game Big South Conference winning streak on the line this weekend, when Liberty welcomes Charleston Southern to Williams Stadium. Should the Flames claim victory in the 16th-straight meeting between the two programs, Liberty would set a new Big South standard for consecutive victory. Liberty current is tied with Coastal Carolina for the mark, as the Chanticleers reeled off eight-straight games over a three-year span (2003-05). |

The Altavista Colonels lost to Appomattox on a rainy, Homecoming night in Appomattox. Poor passing and failure to execute plays led to the Colonels demise as Appomattox managed to put more points on the board than the Colonels. From the beginning of the game, it appeared the Colonels would take control and continue with their aggressive defense and explosive offense. Appomattox put the first points on the board and it just seemed the Colonels couldn't manage to prevail in any of their offensive maneuvers. Penalties caused the Colonels to lose yardage after making impressive runs. A big run by Jamison Robinson was called back after a holding penalty on the Colonels. It still appears that the Colonel's are not able to keep up with their opponents in momentum. The players appear tired and the sideline is once again nothing but a mere spectator. Why the coach does not utilize the sidelines more is a question that most of the fans in the stands question on a weekly basis. Maybe the Colonels would be more successful if rotations were used and players were not forced to play both offense and defense. The Colonels play at home next Friday in their homecoming game against Dan River. Dan River handed the Colonels an unexpected loss last year so it will be interesting to see how they approach the Colonels this year.It is also Senior Night at Altavista so the seniors playing in the fall sports will be recognized. Come out early to the game to see these activities. Seniors will be recognized prior to the game. We need to stand behind our Colonels and show them our support! My prediction is the Colonels will come out with a renewed offensive and defensive strategy as they strive to improve their record. Let's go Colonels!

October 18, 2008 saw the demise of the Flames long time winning streak! It was an unfortunate day for the 15,000 plus fans gathered in Williams stadium on this cold, breezy, fall day. 1st quarter saw the fumble of Dominic Bolden as he reached for the punt from Lafayette's kicker Rodriguez, that led to the fumble recovered by Lafayette. This led to the first TD of the game from Morrow, putting the opposing team ahead of the Flames, something that had not happened for quite some time! Bolden scored a TD for the flames on the next possession. Morrow again put another TD on the board for Lafayette leading to the end of the 1st quarter with the Flames behind 14-7.Liberty managed to put a TD on the board during the 2nd quarter on a Rashad Jennings run but Lafayette managed to put 2 TD's on the board! It just seemed that for everything the Flames did well, the Lafayette heavyweights did better! Liberty was unable to score again until the 4th quarter when it appeared they had regained their momentum and may be leading to yet another remarkable comeback victory. Smith connected with Jonathan Crawford for a 19 yard pass. In the closing minutes of the 4th quarter, LU was within yards of the endzone near the fan filled red zone. It appeared that the Flames had gotten into the endzone to put another 6 points on the board but the referee said it didn't happen. From this viewer, from where we were sitting, it appeared the forward progress did land the player and the football across the endzone! Lafayette then took over but LU did not have the time to pull a victory out. The special teams performance from Lafayette was outstanding. Although the Flames lost 35-21, we should not lose focus of the remarkable plays and players that are a part of this LU team. There is no doubt they will continue to prevail as they play at home next Saturday against Charleston South. Everyone come out and cheer our team on! Go Flames!

On October 11, 2008, the LU Flames showed the Stony Brook football team just who had command of this conference and game! From the opening kickoff, LU took command of the game and had an impressive running game and pass game. The first points of the game came from a field goal by Matt Bevins during the 1st quarter followed by a Mike Brown run leading to a LU 10 point lead at the end of the 1st quarter. During the second quarter, the Flames appeared to weaken slightly and their defense did not seem up to par. But it did not take long for the Flames to put 7 more points on the board with a 20 to 0 halftime lead. Rashad Jennings led the attack of the Flames with the 2nd quarter touchdown and opened up the 3rd quarter with a run into the endzone, with a failed 2 point conversion. Dominic Bolden had an impressive day as well with a 4 yard pass touchdown from QB Brock Smith after 10 plays and taking 5 minutes off the clock!4th quarter saw another Field goal by Bevins making the total LU 33 to Stony Brook's 0! LU definitely had control of the game from the start and it was apparent that Stony Brook could not compete with the Flames! The performance of Rashad Jennings is surely to make some heads turn in the professional league! Keep it up Flames!

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The Sports Network released its mid-season Walter Payton Award watch list earlier today and Liberty’s Rashad Jennings remained among the 16 candidates who are up for the award’s consideration at the halfway point of the year.
Jennings (Sr., RB, Forest, Va.) was one of 13 holdovers from the original 16 preseason watch list members released on Aug. 29. The trio of newcomers to the list include Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar, Weber State quarterback Cameron Higgins and Monmouth running back David Sinisi. Following the midseason reevaluation process, the Walter Payton Award watch list consists of eight quarterbacks, five running backs and three wide receivers. Besides Jennings (725 yards and eight touchdowns) and Sinisi (1,101 yards and 13 touchdowns), the three remaining running back candidates include Western Illinois’ Herb Donaldson (954 yards and 14 touchdowns), Yale’s Mike McLeod (401 yards and three touchdowns) and Colgate’s Jordan Scott (930 yards and 11 touchdowns). The Sports Network will revise the Walter Payton Award watch list two more times before voting commences. The list of 16 candidates will be reviewed early in November, before the finalized list will be handed over to the voting panel at the conclusion of the regular season. The 22nd annual Walter Payton Award is given to the top player in Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) football. The top three finalists will be announced by the Sports Network on Dec. 1, while the winner will be honored at the Sports Network FCS Awards Dinner, held on the eve of the NCAA Division I Football Championship game (Dec. 18). Jennings is Liberty’s first-ever football player to land a spot on the Walter Payton Award watch list. |

Jacksonville versus Denver; A great AFC week six game. Jacksonville has a sneaky offense combined with a fierce defense, while Denver has a powerful offense and a shaky defense. So what does that mean? It means we are in store for one heck of a football game. The Jaguars pride themselves in their two-headed monster at running back that consists of seasoned veteran Fred Taylor along with touchdown hog Maurice Jones-Drew. It is an awesome combination that has put Jacksonville in prime position over the past couple of years. They also have a beastly defense that has “Big” John Henderson, Mike Peterson, and Reggie Nelson. The defense has totaled eight sacks, four forced fumbles, five interceptions, and two touchdowns so far on the season. It will be tough for Denver to break this unit down. But they will try to do so with the likes of Jay Cutler, Brandon Marshall, and Michael Pittman. Cutler has already thrown for 1,502 yards so far and 423 of them gave been collected by Marshall. They are the new Manning-Harrison connection. And if you think Jones-Drew has a nose for the end zone, Pittman must be an elephant running the ball as he has four touchdowns with none of them being over five yards long. But it is a tale of two sides as the Denver defense is totally offensive. You would think a unit consisting of Champ Bailey, D.J. Williams, and Dre’ Bly would be one of the tougher combos, but they have given up an average of 388 total yards on the season and have just recently lost to the Kansas City Chiefs because they could not stop Larry Johnson and the run game. This one looks to be a scoring fest in the Mile High City…

Just as expected, the Denver Broncos got off to a fast start as Jay Cutler completed his first three passes, each to Brandon Marshall, for forty-five yards, scrambled for another eight, utilized running back Michael Pittman for twelve yards, and finally threw two passes to Brandon Stokley, the first for four yards and the second for eleven yards and a touchdown. It was one heck of a drive and allowed Denver to make a statement about how this day was going to be. So with the extra point by Matt Prater, the score would start off at 7-0 Broncos. The Jacksonville Jaguars would then receive the ball and look good themselves. David Garrard completed three passes for twenty-five yards, but on his fourth pass, this one to Fred Taylor, the ball was fumbled by Taylor and recovered by Bronco linebacker D.J. Williams. And on a strange twist of fate, the Broncos gave the ball right back to Jacksonville after Cutler fumbled the ball on a scramble play. So with the ball at about mid-field, the Jags looked poised to put some points on the board. Maurice Jones-Drew ran for nine yards, Garrard completed a four yard pass to Reggie Williams, MJD ran for another yard, Garrard and Williams hooked up for another four yards, and Josh Scobee finished things off with a forty-eight yard field goal to make the score 7-3 Broncos. Denver would now go on offense looking to answer back. Pittman ran three times for twenty-two yards and then Cutler threw a deep pass intended for Marshall but was intercepted by Gerald Sensabaugh. MJD ran twice for eleven yards and Garrard threw a twelve yard pass to Matt Jones to end out the first with the score 7-3 Broncos.

The second quarter would open up with a bang as David Garrard completed a deep pass to Troy Williamson for sixty-nine yards that brought the ball all the way down to the Denver two yard line. Unfortunately though, it would be called back due to an offensive holding call on Jacksonville. Garrard would complete another pass to Dennis Northcutt, but fourth down came fast and the Jags would be forced to punt. Denver would go back on O and try to increase their four point lead. Jay Cutler would complete a fourteen yard pass to Brandon Stokley on third down, followed by a big eleven yard run by Michael Pittman. Another Cutler to Brandon Marshall pass would bring the ball down to the Jacksonville twenty-eight, but two plays later Cutler would complete a second pass to Marshall on the drive, but Marshall would end up fumbling the ball away. This would bring a start to a very important drive for the Jags; a twelve play drive that saw David Garrard pass for twenty-nine yards and Maurice Jones-Drew run for twenty-six yards (including a one yard touchdown run) would put the Jags up 10-7 with about three minutes left in the first half. Denver would again go back on offense and again try to work the best part of their team for some more points. Pittman would rush for eighteen yards and catch a nine yard pass, but failed to convert a fourth down try when he gained no yards on fourth and one. The Jags would regain possession on their own thirty and try to add another score before half-time. Garrard threw four passes for fifty yards to take it all the way to the Denver twenty-seven, but was sacked on second down and fumbled the ball back to Denver. Cutler would throw two incomplete passes, both intended for Pittman and Pittman himself would run once for two yards, but the Broncos would end up punting away with just fourteen ticks left. And with just that little of time left, Garrard would take one kneel to take the game into half-time with the Jags leading 10-7.

Jacksonville would get the kick-off to open up the third and work very quickly. David Garrard completed a seven yard pass to Matt Jones, a twenty-seven yard pass to Marcedes Lewis, and Maurice Jones-Drew would finish it off with a forty-six yard run to pay dirt. The extra point would make the score 17-7 in favor of the Jags. Denver would also throw down a good drive as Michael Pittman ran for twenty-four yards and Jay Cutler passed for twenty-three yards and they would send Matt Prater out for a thirty-nine yard field goal. Off course he would hit it, as he is the hottest kicker in the league this year. So the score would look a little bit better as the Jags would only lead 17-10 now. Jacksonville would start things off nicely as Troy Williamson returned the ball back twenty-six yards to their own twenty-one. Garrard would complete a twelve yard toss to MJD, but they would give most of it back when MJD lost seven yards on a rushing play. Garrard would then complete a nineteen yard pass, a nine yard pass, and finally a thirty yard pass, caught by Lewis, for the touchdown. The extra point would turn the score to 24-10 Jags. Denver would continue to look incompetent as they could get nothing going on their next drive. Cutler did complete a couple of nice passes to Brandon Marshall and Darrell Jackson, but it would come up fourth down as the third quarter came to a fast end with the score at 24-10 Jacksonville.

Denver would open up with a punt and the Jags would try to end this game. David Garrard completed a fourteen yard pass to Matt Jones, but would eventually punt it away. Denver looked just as bad, if not worse as they went three and out. It looked as if Jay Cutler kept trying too hard to complete the long ball to his favorite receiver Brandon Marshall, but it just wasn’t happening. Jacksonville would do their best impersonation of the Broncos as they went though their own three and out. But finally, Denver would put a good drive together. A twenty-one yard pass from Cutler to Marshall would lead to an eleven yard pass from Cutler to Daniel Graham for a touchdown. It would now be 24-17 Jags. Jacksonville got the ball back ready to add some insurance. Maurice Jones-Drew ran twice for seven yards each, but a couple of Garrard incomplete passes would bring up fourth down. So down by a touchdown, the Broncos would try to tie things up and possibly go ahead before the end. Michael Pittman ran for four yards, Cutler threw an incomplete pass to Marshall, and threw another incompletion to his “boy” Marshall. But with a little under six minutes to go, Denver decided to punt the ball away as they thought they would have time to get it back. But unfortunately for them, they wouldn’t. Jacksonville would milk that clock down good. Garrard completed an eight yard pass to Reggie Williams followed by a four yard QB run up the middle for the first down. Garrard would throw a deep pass that would go incomplete, but a huge defensive pass interference call on the Bronco D would destroy all hopes of a comeback for the home team. MJD would run for twelve yard on three carries, Fred Taylor would return to the field after the hard hit early in the first quarter to rush for ten yards on two carries, and Garrard would kneel three times to end the game. It was a nice game overall and showed that the Jags are a true force to reckon with in the mighty AFC. The final score would be 24-17 Jags.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Following the Flames’ fifth shutout victory under head coach Danny Rocco, the Flames moved up one spot in both the Sports Network and FCS Coaches rankings, as the nation’s Top 25 FCS polls were released earlier today.
Following a month absence from Williams Stadium, the Flames welcomed Big South newcomer Stony Brook to the league in grand fashion. Liberty doubled up the Seawolves in terms of total offensive yards, 466 to 233, while keeping Stony Brook from denting the scoreboard for the 18th shutout in program history. Despite a topsy-turvy weekend in FCS football that saw three Top 10 teams suffer defeat, only one of the Top 15 teams fell below the mark. North Dakota State, who ranked as high as No. 2 earlier in the year before falling to Youngstown State, lost its third game in a 27-22 decision to Western Illinois. The setback dropped the Bison out of the Top 15, falling to No. 20 in the Sports Network and No. 16 in the FCS Coaches Poll. The Flames were the benefactor in Bisons’ loss, moving up to No. 14 in the Sports Network and No. 15 in the FCS Coaches Poll. Liberty has now been ranked in the Sports Network polls six-straight weeks and five-consecutive weeks in the FCS Coaches Poll, extending the program’s record-setting rankings streak. In two others polls, the Flames also saw modest gains. In the Sports Media Entertainment Network poll, Liberty moved up from No. 15 to No. 13, while remaining at No. 16 in the AnyGivenSaturday.com poll for the second-straight week. The Flames will put the nation’s longest FCS winning streak and second-longest home winning streak, both at 11 games, on the line this weekend when they host Lafayette. The Leopards will be making their inaugural trip to Lynchburg in the first-ever meeting between Liberty and Lafayette. Kickoff is set for 3:35 p.m., on Saturday, marking the middle game of a three-game homestand for Liberty. |

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Two of the most recognizable names in the history of the Flames football program are going to receive an honor only one other has previously received. During Liberty’s upcoming Homecoming Weekend, the Flames are going to retire jerseys for former head coach Sam Rutigliano and Liberty and NFL standout Eric Green.
Two years ago, Liberty retired its first football jersey in honor of founder and former chancellor Dr. Jerry Falwell. Liberty’s No. 1 fan since opening the University in 1971, Falwell was ceremonially honored during Liberty’s Homecoming match-up with William & Mary on Oct. 14, 2006, as a No. 71 jersey was hung just over his press box suite. Rutigliano, the winningest coach in the program’s history, guided Liberty for 11 years (1989-99). He posted a 67-53 record during his 11-year tenure and his teams were consistently ranked in the Top 20 of many NCAA I-AA football polls. The program’s highest ranking was No. 8 in 1990, as the Flames started the season, 4-0. In 1997, he guided the program to a tie for the most wins in school history with a 9-2 mark, which included victories over No. 19 Caly Poly and No. 15 Appalachian State. The great Chris Berman referred to this one as ‘The Bay of Pigs Matchup.’ It was Green Bay versus Tampa Bay; Brett Favre versus Jeff Garcia. Wait… Favre is a Jet now? ... Garcia was benched in favor of Brian Griese? O.k. then, it’s Aaron Rodgers versus Brian Griese. Not as much as a main draw, but both have shown signs of skill this year. Rodgers had led the Favre-less Pack to a 2-1 record thus far only losing to the Super Bowl favorite Cowboys. Griese, on the other hand, had thrown about two hundred passes last weekend in a comeback victory against the Bears. On the running back side of things, who even knew about Earnest Graham and Ryan Grant this time last year? But a great second-half performance from both had vaulted them both into stardom. The biggest and most tragic story of the weekend involved Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant who had recently lost his infant son and was dealing with a load of stress and anguish, but decided to clear his head up in the slightest amount by actually playing in the game. He dedicated this one in honor of his son and didn’t disappoint in the least as he ended up playing a crucial role in the outcome of this fantastic game. So without further ado, I present to you the Green Bay Packers against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
